Nirvana Lyrics Index

| Nirvana was a grunge rock band founded in 1987 and disbanded in
1994 upon the death of its leader, Kurt Cobain. Many critics and
historians hail Nirvana as the "flagship band" of "Generation X".
Nirvana's landmark album, Nevermind rocked the foundations of
pre-millennium soft rock mentality. Cobain started a scene, captured the
mindset of a generation and bottled it with self-referential,
self-questioning lyrics and sounds that tore into the fabric of middle
America. Without Nirvana, there would be have been no Britpop - no
Blur Oasis or Green Day - no Nu Metal - no Limp Bizkit, Sum 41. There
would have certainly been no Radiohead, Coldplay, or Muse; no Franz
Ferdinand, Rapture or Queens of the Stone age, and definitely no Foo
Fighters. All of these bands draw on Nirvana's peculiar blend of
the musically racuous and the beautiful; the dangerous melange of
introspection, angst and the feeling that something is not quite right
with the world. Not to mention bold chord changes. In September 1991, 'Nevermind' was released by Geffen - a sparkling rock album full of brilliant, impossibly catchy songs. Kurt was totally aware of its potential. Prior to the release of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain said: "We feel we can appeal to more than just the metal or alternative markets. We want to reach the top 40."

"...A friend of mine and I were goofing around my house one night. We were kinda drunk, and we were writing graffiti all over the walls of my house. And she wrote, 'Kurt smells like Teen Spirit.' Earlier on, we'd been having this discussion about teen revolution and stuff like that. And I took [what she wrote] as a compliment. I thought she was saying that I was a person who could inspire. I just thought it was a nice little title..." - Kurt Kobain |
